Our ‘Inside Out’ creative wellbeing project in Blaengarw encouraged people in our village to come out of their homes after a long time in lockdown in 2021, taking gentle steps into their local natural and beautiful environment and reconnecting with each other.
This project stimulated increased awareness of the beauty of our local lakeside and mountain landscape, its flora and fauna. The group created beautiful artwork inspired by the experience of being immersed in nature and the outdoor environment. We based the project at Blaengarw Workmen’s Hall for a safe and warm arts space and also went outside on nature and mindfulness walks around the lake as part of the sessions.
We offered different art forms (e.g. nature arts, creative writing, photography, collaging) and worked with a group of 12 local adults of all ages. Participants were given space to to express themselves and listen to each other, to share experiences, to feel supported and to explore creativity together.
This project offered a healing experience by connecting us with the natural environment after long periods of lockdown and social isolation during the pandemic. Taking part in this project increased mental and physical wellbeing and created new friendships and connections. Some members of this group enjoyed the project so much that they set up their own social and creative group when this project ended, which still meets every week at Blaengarw Workmen’s Hall.
“ We take it for granted sometimes living here don’t we…”
“When you sit down and look at it all, and take it in, it makes you feel relaxed…”
“ I haven’t painted since I was about 10! I’m really enjoying it .”
This project combined creativity with mindfulness, nature and social connection.
