The Art Garden Yr Ardd Gelf

As part of The Art Garden / Yr Ardd Gelf programme, funded by The Arts Council of Wales and supported by The National Lottery Community Fund, we have been working in partnership with The Wyndham Street Centre in Cardiff this summer. The Art Garden / Yr Ardd Gelf project builds upon the seeds of our Creativity and Nature for Wellbeing projects which we have been developing over many years with partners in Health, Social Care and the Third Sector in Cardiff and The Vale of Glamorgan.

Artist Anna Amalia Coviello facilitated creative ‘Nourishing Riverside’ sessions in June and July, working with with local children, young people, volunteers and visitors of the Wyndham Street Centre to design a colourful mural for the outside wall of the Centre. The project was supported by Grant Cockerill from The Wyndham Street Centre, and Katja Stiller, our Therapeutic Art Facilitator, who also created a short film of the project.

The aim of this project was to reflect on the outside what is happening inside the centre. Participants chose the theme of fruit and vegetables because their food bank and community garden offer a really positive focus for the local Riverside community.

We had great feedback from everyone who took part:

“I think this is a great project, bringing the community together, learning new skills and having fun”

“The artwork looks great and relates to what is happening inside the building”

“I love it, it looks great without compromising the architecture of the building”

“ Amazing, what a great way to bring families together, and we can make new connections”

“It is a brilliant way to meet people in your community you haven’t met before”

“I enjoyed learning new techniques from Anna on how to do shading and all about colour proportions, balancing light and dark”

“I enjoyed the collaboration”

“The looks really realistic, 3D, I am very proud!“

“I love seeing how my son is into this I think this is the happiest I have seen him in a long time “

“There were a lot of people who said they can’t paint or use spray paint. But because of the atmosphere, Anna, and it was fun, people could have a go, learn and get fast results”

“ A lot of people saw what was happening, stopped and joined in”

“The murals have transformed the outside space it looks so much more bright and welcoming now, thank you!”

“We have a lovely garden now”
